What Vitamins and Supplements are Good for Hair Skin and Nail Growth?

What Vitamins and Supplements are Good for Hair Skin and Nail Growth?

hair nails and skn supplementsMany women and more and more men are spending huge amounts of money on beauty products for skin, hair and nails.

In most cases, these products act only on the surface.  They only cover up problems whose origin is caused by internal imbalances.

Skin, hair and nails reflect your health.

To strengthen their structure, you must act on your nutritional balance.  You must also support the action of keratin, an essential component of hair, but also nails and skin.

In the market there are many food supplements which claim to help grow "skin, nails and hair."  Do they work?  Are they harmless?  This article will help clarify this.

What is a food supplement?

These small capsules are used to provide nutrients that are sometimes lacking because of our lifestyle or because they are not present in our diet.  These nutrients are often recommended to improve the growth of hair or nails, as well as the quality of the skin.  Taking vitamins and supplements is often a long term process before results are seen.

Who is it for?

Especially for those experiencing problems with:

  • very damaged hair due to chemical treatments,
  • soft nails due to poor diet,
  • or just some sort of stressful period that has affected the skin.

Supplements will be of no use to those suffering from medical problems such as hair falling out in handfuls which can be a symptom of anaemia, hormonal problems, or for people with unhealthy lifestyles.  Vitamins and supplements can give a helping hand, but they are not drugs and should not be used as such.

Are supplements safe?

In advanced countries such as the UK and USA, food supplements are regulated and controlled.  Nevertheless, I strongly advise you choose products which are natural and always check the ingredients.  For example, it will always healthier to eat a few spoonfuls of powdered brewer's yeast for hair, instead of capsules which contain ingredients you have never heard of.

Another tip is just because a supplement is more expensive it does not mean it’s necessarily better.  Many supplements are sold as wonder cures with hefty price tags but it does mean they are any better than a simple vitamin tablet.

Amino acids and their significance for healthy hair

It has long been none that methionine (an amino acid) strengthens nails and helps prevent hair loss

MethionineMethionine contains sulphur and is able to form chains, which in turn are connected to each other.  This is exactly what happens to the levels of hair and nails.  Methionine can strengthen the structure of the hair and nails in a significant way.

Methionine can also help fight against alopecia.   In 2006 a study was published as part of a Dermatology Congress in Florence.  The study involved thirty patients with alopecia.  Thirty subjects were divided into two groups.  A preparation based on amino acids and vitamins B was administered to the first control group, whilst a placebo was administered to the second group.  The result after one year concluded the group to which methionine was administered had 10% longer hair in the growth phase than in the placebo group 2.

Arginine promotes hair growth

arginineSome research publications have demonstrated that arginine, which is an amino acid, provides a tremendous impact on the growth of hair.  As a precursor to nitric oxide, it has a crucial influence on hair growth.  The vasodilator effects of arginine promote the growth of hair when nitric oxide is formed from arginine, and opens the potassium channels of cells.  This improves the irrigation of roots, and stimulates hair growth.

Glutamine is essential for hair growth

Glutamine is the most represented amino acid in the body.  Whilst the body manufactures glutamine itself, overtime with age, it no longer produces it in sufficient quantities.  Therefore glutamine supplements from middle or advanced age is particularly appropriate for those who wish to strengthen their hair structure.

The need for glutamine is significantly higher in times of stress or physical fatigue.  Glutamine is formed from glutamic acid.  By taking sulphur/Glutamine supplements it will help hair growth.

Vitamins and zinc are also beneficial to the Hair, Skin and Nails

Like skin, hair also has a great need to be nourished by minerals, especially zinc.

zincVitamins and zinc are absolutely essential to the proper functioning of the body.  They are especially important for the growth of hair.  Zinc is involved in the formation of keratin, a principal component and particularly valuable for hair, skin and nails.

Furthermore, the human body needs zinc to enable the formation of collagen, which is not only a significant substance to connect tissues that helps to anchor the hair in the dermis, but also for the hair structure as a whole.

Similarly cell division for hair growth would not be possible without zinc.  Therefore alopecia is one of the first signs of zinc deficiency, and specialists almost always recommend zinc to be administered to the patient.

In addition all of the B vitamins are essential for healthy hair growth.  Brittle or dull hair is a sign of deficiency of vitamin B.

Vitamin C also plays an important role in the growth of healthy hair.  The body needs vitamin C to bind iron and red blood cells, thereby achieving the hair root.

The skin is the first visible witness to your health

Our skin provides tissue protection against external aggressors.  It allows the maintenance of body temperature, protect muscles, bones and organs against injuries.

Beautiful skin is often the first visible indicator of good health and a good diet because many skin changes are partly the result of nutritional deficiencies.

An aging face (flabby cheeks, sagging skin under the chin) may result from deficiency in zinc, vitamins C and D, and amino acids that provide elasticity to the skin collagen.

If the skin is pale it can be a sign of anemia (lack of red blood cells) usually due to iron deficiency, but sometimes also folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, copper or vitamin C.

Dry skin is usually due to a lack of polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-6, vitamin A or beta-carotene (a precursor of vitamin A).

In recent years researchers have begun to establish a link between a diet high in refined sugar and acne.  Refined sugar products have a high glycemic index, that is to say, they quickly increase blood sugar levels in the blood, which increases insulin production.  This high rate of insulin result in a cascade of reactions that contribute to the development of acne.

Acne also occurs frequently in the event of zinc deficiency and vitamin A.

The hair and nails cycle

Every day we have hair, skin and nail cycles.  It is normal to lose hair every day since they are subject to a natural cycle.  But it is not normal to lose more than grows and this is due to several causes.

First, hormonal causes.

In women, especially during pregnancy, significant production of estrogen results in a very beautiful hair (thick and shiny).  But after childbirth, a large hormonal imbalance occurs and this can cause significant hair loss.  Similarly, during menopause, the decline of the secretion of estrogen causes a hormonal imbalance in favour of androgen hormones (testosterone), which causes a weakening of the hair (thinner, slower growth and loss of gloss).

In men, hair loss is usually related to mostly hormonal hereditary factors.  This is the main cause of the so-called androgenetic alopecia.  The hair loss is due to a particular sensitivity of the sebaceous follicle and the decrease in the production of dihydrotestosterone.

Nutritional causes can also worsen hair loss or cause dandruff.

We now know that hair loss, even when they are caused by hormones, can be accelerated or aggravated by a diet that does not provide enough micronutrients, especially the B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, zinc and amino acids.

Vitamin B6 deficiency may explain an imbalance in the production of sebum.  However, oily hair and dandruff are caused by excess sebum production that promotes proliferation of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, yeasts) and causes flaking of the scalp skin and the production of "skins".

CONCLUSION

Take keratin for hair, skin and Nails

A poor diet based on refined sugar is not going to help your skin, hair and nails.  Fruit like grapefruit and berries, vegetables and foods rich in animal protein such as meat, poultry and fish give you the most of the nutrients your body needs to regenerate your skin, hair and nails.   (As discussed before these include beta-carotene, vitamin A, B vitamins, zinc, silicon, sulphur amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids).

However, in some cases perhaps due to hormonal problems or external events your diet may prove insufficient.  Nutritional supplementation can then play a decisive role to regenerate your skin.

Today supplements can reinforce the action of keratin, the protein used as the main component of skin, hair and nails which gives them their strength.
