Diarrhea - Symptoms and Treatment

diarrheaIn this article I will discuss the causes and treatment for diarrhea and cover the below topics -

1.  Definition
2.  Symptoms
3.  Diagnosis
4.  Treatment including natural herbal cures for diarrhea
5.  Prevention

Definition of Diarrhea

The diarrhea is a disorder characterized by loose stools or liquids which are abnormally elevated or have an increased frequency of occurrence of around several times a day.

Diarrhea can affect people of any age, and some forms are very infectious.  People suffer from acute diarrhea on average 3-5 times a year, and long-term effects are rare.  Children under 5 years of age suffer on average about 1-3 episodes of diarrhea each year.

If you have been experiencing Diarrhea for less than 2 weeks it would normally be classified as acute diarrhea.  Chronic diarrhea is when the symptoms last for more than a month.

Diarrhea is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of another disease and can be found in numerous ailments.  Whether it’s acute or chronic, the causes are different.

Causes of Diarrhea

Diarrhea is caused when the feces move so quickly through the intestines that they do not have time to absorb the water needed for the "strengthening" of the stool.

There are several causes of diarrhea.  Acute infectious are the most common cause of diarrhea.  Below is a general list that can cause diarrhoea -

•  incomplete digestion of food - for example, some people cannot digest lactose, that is to say, the sugar found in milk.  Others have trouble digesting and absorbing fat or carbohydrates;

• Some bowel diseases, for example ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease;

• Bacterial and viral infections, such as salmonella or rotavirus.  These infectious conditions are more commonly the cause of transient diarrhea affecting children;

• Intestinal parasites, mainly encountered during a journey;

• Certain medication drugs such as antihypertensive, drugs containing magnesium and antibiotics;

• Radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

•an overactive thyroid or cancers particularly affecting the colon.

In the case of functional bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, muscle contractions which normally move feces throughout the intestine are prone to spasm which cause diarrhea.

If you suspect that your medication is causing diarrhea, do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor.

Diarrhea does not always depend on something that was ingested - stressful events or upheaval can also cause it.

Symptoms and Complications

If you’re suffering from diarrhea your stools will be too soft and like liquid.  You may suffer abdominal cramps and nausea or you will experience bloating.  You might even have a fever with chills.  If diarrhea persists for a few days, you probably will feel a light-headedness or weakness.  These symptoms are subsequent to a rapid loss of minerals, sugar and water that your body needs.  In general, the diarrhea does not result in loss of control of bowel function - but if that's the case, you should consult your doctor.

Urinating maybe less.  This is explained by the fact that your body loses water in the stool rather than in urine.  If the diarrhea lasts more than 48 hours, or if you have a fever of 38.5 ° C or higher, or painful abdominal cramps or vomiting that prevent you from absorbing liquids by mouth, see a doctor immediately.  Acute diarrhea accompanied by fever and bloody stools are sometimes signs of a potentially serious infection or parasites.

Always consult a doctor when a child with diarrhea has not urinated for 6 hours - the child could be severely dehydrated.

Diagnosis of Diarrhea

The diagnosis of chronic diarrhea is not difficult.  The cause of these symptoms will be more complicated to find. Your doctor will first identify the cause of your diarrhea by asking you questions about your eating habits and medications you take (including non-prescription). Samples of blood and urine can be collected in order to detect the presence of infection, if necessary.  Stool analysis may take several days, but it is important that your doctor knows what is causing your diarrhea so he can recommend appropriate treatment.

Any doctor trying to diagnose the cause of the diarrhoea will have to check -

• The medical history of the patient;

• The duration of diarrhea;

• The appearance and frequency of stool;

• Medications recently introduced or withdrawn;

• Whether the patient has travelled anywhere recently including the place and living conditions;

• The food recently consumed;

• Other symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.

If the diagnosis is not clear at the end of the initial diagnosis then further examinations oriented in the suspected areas will have to be conducted.  These include:

• Blood sampling;

• Analysis and stool culture with a search bacteria or parasites;

• Radiographic abdominal X-Ray

• If symptoms persistence, more rarely, endoscopic examination of the digestive tract, colonoscopy or endoscopy.

In the case of chronic diarrhea, a colonoscopy may be necessary to eliminate the possibility of more serious disorders.  This examination involves inserting a flexible tube with a small camera on the end (endoscope) into the anus to look inside the colon (the last segment of the intestines).

Treatment and Prevention of Diarrhea

The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and to ensure the return to normal bowel movements. It is also important to prevent dehydration that can occur due to the loss of an abnormal amount of water during acute diarrhea - especially for children and OAP's.

It is not always necessary to take medication against diarrhea.  If possible, adults should impose a 48-hour waiting period to 72 hours in case the diarrhea stops by itself.  Leaving diarrhea to "run its course", allows your body to get rid of bacteria naturally and eliminate what caused it.  If it persists, go and see your doctor.

Diarrhea Cures for Adults

In most cases, diarrhea will be related to an infection, such as gastroenteritis, for example.  Once the cause is identified, it should be treated.  It may be antibiotics for bacterial infection, anti-parasite treatment in case of parasitic disease, stopping a suspected drug which may be causing it, the treatment of a disease in which diarrhea is a symptom, such as inflammatory bowel disease or cancer.

Proper diet is recommended with drinking of water to avoid dehydration and food intake such as rice, for example.

If the cause of diarrhea seems to be a parasite or bacteria, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to get rid of it.  Otherwise, a doctor or pharmacist may recommend a medication such as Attapulgite, Bismuth Subsalicylate or Loperamide to stop the diarrhea.  If symptoms are still present 48 hours after the onset of diarrhea, see a doctor.

Dehydration caused by water lost during frequent bowel movements can lead to serious complications.  In particular it may pass too quickly for the drugs in your body to work and affect their efficiency.  Be sure to discuss this with your doctor.  Dehydration can also cause kidney damage and electrolyte imbalances.

Signs of dehydration are identified by the dry mouth, increased thirst, decreased urination, a feeling of weakness or light-headedness.  Symptoms also include some nausea, muscle cramps and a higher body temperature.  As soon as the first symptoms of diarrhea occur, drink lots of fluids. Drink at least 2 cups every hour.  Oral rehydration solutions choices have a composition very close to that of the intestinal fluid, which is important especially for children and seniors.  Be sure to consult a health professional before treating a child or a person with diarrhea if accompanied by vomiting.

It’s best to give your bowels "a rest" after a bout of diarrhea.  Relax until diarrhea disappears.  Taking care of your body makes recovery more quickly.  You might want to eat food that "hold" the stool and delay their movement in the colon, such as bananas, rice, toast (the BRAT diet).

PREVENTION OF DIARRHEA

Try to find out what caused your diarrhea - you'll be able to prevent it if necessary in the future.  Because bacterial infectious cause a lot of diarrhea, take these simple precautions -

• Avoid touching the hands of a person with diarrhea.  If you must touch them, wash your hands immediately after.

• Wash your hands before preparing food and after using the toilet if you have diarrhea, then dry them with a disposable paper towel - not with the towel that everyone uses.

• Foods contain several infectious agents that cause diarrhea.  Refrain from eating meat that is undercooked or raw seafood.  Also, beware of foods with freshness date has passed and those who were left in the open air.

•  When traveling abroad, especially in Asia, South America or Africa, its best to consume only bottled water, even for brushing teeth.  Ideally you should prepare your trips in advance by learning about the necessary vaccinations and preventative measures to be taken to the area where you are going;

• Isolation measures may be necessary in certain types of infections.
