Chamomile to Relax

chamomileDrinking tea and coffee is something most people do every day, several times a day.  Instead of digesting all that caffeine (remember caffeine is in tea as well) have a nice cup of chamomile.  Chamomile is known to have calming properties because the compounds in chamomile (matricaria recutita) bind to the same brain receptors as medication drugs like Diazepam.

Chamomile can also be taken as a supplement which contains the active ingredient apigenin.  Several studies have been undertaken on chamomile including one in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Centre which studies patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD).  The patients who took chamomile supplements for 8 weeks saw a significant decrease in symptoms compared to patients who just took a placebo tablet.

Valerian for Insomnia

valerian root 2Some herbal supplements reduce anxiety without making you sleepy (such as L-theanine), while others are sedatives. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is squarely in the second category. It is a sleep aid, for insomnia. It contains sedative compounds; the German government has approved it as a treatment for sleep problems.

Valerian smells kind of nasty, so most people take it as a capsule or tincture, rather than a tea. If you want to try it, take it in the evening—not before you go to work! Valerian is often combined with other sedative herbs such as hops, chamomile, and lemon balm.

It can be puchased here along with reviews of the product.

L-theanine (or green tea) to De-Stress

l theanineIt’s known that Buddhist monks can meditate for a long time, both rested and attentive. One line of thought behind this is because of the amino acid within their green tea they drink called L-theanine, says Mark Blumenthal, of the American Botanical Council.

Research suggests that L-theanine helps decrease a fast pulse and blood pressure, and a number of studies have discovered that it reduces stress. Research with stress-prone individuals indicated they were calmer during a stressful event if they took 200 milligrams of L-theanine prior to the event.

Hold your breath!

andrew weilI’m not advocating that you just turn blue, but yoga breathing has proven to work in lowering tension and anxiety. In his bestselling 2011 publication Impulsive Well-Being, Andrew Weil, MD, introduced a classic yoga respiration technique he calls the 4-7-8 breath.

To do the 4-7-8 breath, exhale completely through your mouth, then inhale through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven.  Then breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat at least two times a day.

If you’re breathing deeply then it’s almost impossible to have an anxiety attack.

Health professionals usually advise that you just get your omega 3s from foods whenever possible. Oily, cold-water fishes like salmon are the very best sources of the fatty acids; a six-oz. piece of boiled wild salmon contains about 3.75 grams.

Eat Regular Meals to Overcome Nervousness

Learn mindfulness meditation

Minfulness meditationMindfulness meditation, initially a Buddhist practice but now a mainstream treatment, is especially successful in treating stress, says Teresa M. Edenfield, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in the Veterans Administration Medical Centre in Durham, N.C., who regularly uses it to treat stress patients. "The act of practicing awareness enables one to go through the real essence of every minute as it actually happens, rather than what's expected or dreaded," she says.

The best way to start? You can begin by just "paying attention to the present moment, by choice, with interest, and with an attempt to attend non-judgmentally," Edenfield says
