Flaxseed Oil For Dry Eyes
Natural Remedies for Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eye syndrome is a complex disease that results in visual disturbances and significantly increases the risk of eye infections when it is caused by reduced tear production.
Who is more at Risk of Dry Eyes?
It’s definitely more common in people of Asian or Hispanic descent than among people of African or white descent. Dry eye syndrome affects about one in ten people over 40.
What Causes Dry Eyes?
When you feel dry eyes it does not necessarily mean you lack fluid in the eyes. The reason could be to do with the water of the tears that conatin fat in three layers:
◾ The top layer of the coating of the tear film in the eye has about a three millionths of an inch thick gland of fat secreted by the meibomian. This layer prevents the evaporation of tears and helps the tears covering his eyes.
◾ The intermediate coating layer of the tear film of the eye, approximately ten times thicker, is an aqueous liquid released by the tear glands.
◾ The innermost layer of the tear film, less than a millionth of an inch thick, is formed by the proteins released by goblet cells.
The three layers are essential for the tears to perform their cleaning function of the eye and protects against infection whilst not interfering with vision.
Dry eye syndrome is usually not caused by the failure of the eye to produce the aqueous intermediate layer, but the inability of the eye to produce fats that prevent drying tears. In fact, some people with dry eye syndrome complain of producing excess tears.
Other Internal and Environmental factors that can also make the symptoms of dry eye worse are -
- sensitivity to sunlight caused by dry eye syndrome aggravated by dry air,
- chemical fumes,
- excessive reading,
or excessive use of computer.
Antihistamines, beta-blockers, and oral contraceptives can also worsen the symptoms. Dry eyes cause particular discomfort for people with contact lenses.
Medical treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome
When dry eye syndrome is not associated with an autoimmune disease such as Sjogren's syndrome, doctors often prescribe artificial tears to be used all day, along with castor oil or petroleum jelly which is to be applied to the eyelid before bedtime to prevent inflammation, and antibiotics to prevent infection.
Flaxseed Oil For Eyes
Nutritional intervention for mild cases of dry eye syndrome
When the underlying cause of dry eye syndrome is an autoimmune disease, Steroids are generally added to the treatment plan. But for mild cases of dry eye syndrome, Flaxseed may be added to the treatment plan. Flaxseed is something you eat rather than something you put in your eyes, and is by far the best of all the natural remedies for dry eye syndrome.
Flaxseed comes from the same plant harvested for flax fibre that’s woven into the cloth. Flaxseed is an excellent source of essential fatty acids that are converted into anti-inflammatory hormones.
Flaxseed oil is a clinically proven treatment for dry eye syndrome. Brazilian scientists investigated flaxseed oil capsules as a treatment for dry eye.
The research team in Brazil studied dry eye syndrome in women. The women were randomly assigned to 3 different groups. One group received a capsule 1000 mg of flaxseed oil daily. Another group received two flaxseed oil capsules daily. The third group took a placebo daily.
The study lasted 180 days. In the study, scientists concluded that Flaxseed seed oil did reduce inflammation caused by dry eye syndrome compared the group who took a placebo tablet.

Flaxseed oil is also helpful for dry eye syndrome in children. Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London (Children Hospital) gave children a daily dose of 500 mg of flaxseed oil. After two years, researchers found that the use of the oil has been associated with a decrease in the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Flaxseed oil also reduces the number of eye infections, especially conjunctivitis.
Flaxseed oil is also beneficial for glaucoma. Melbourne University researchers in Australia found that flaxseed oil supplements reduces intraocular pressure, which is the main symptom of glaucoma. Linseed oil stimulates the release of fluid from the eye, but does not have a diuretic effect in general throughout the body.
Flaxseed Oil Benefits for Dry Eyes
If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, Flaxseeds can be obtained directly as seeds. However Flax seeds are very small and can pass directly through the gastrointestinal tract if not crushed before being eaten. A teaspoon of crushed seeds mixed with food or perhaps a healthy drink or smoothie would be a good idea.
The five tips to beat the dry eye syndrome
What other natural remedies are there for dry eye syndrome? Here are my five tips to beat dry eye syndrome?:
- Before taking a flight, make sure you have some natural dry eye treatments in a bottle to take with you.
- If you regularly use antihistamines, try to increase the amount of anti-allergenic medication such as quercetin. This antioxidant plant is in all kinds of fruits and vegetables, but especially in apples, grapefruit segments, and onions. Some people have found that increasing the amount of these fruits is sufficient to help stop the use antihistamines for dry eyes and for the relief of allergies.
- Use a humidifier in winter if your house is heated by a gas heater or electric.
- Integrate other sources of essential fatty acids in your diet. A Mediterranean diet called purslane plant, walnuts, almonds and fish oil are among the best sources of healthy fats.
- As often as possible, just close your eyes and allow moisture to accumulate.
Regular use of over the counter remedies for the symptoms of dry eyes will help you find lasting relief for dry eye syndrome. You will then have freedom against itchy eyes, redness, blurriness, and help get protection against eye infections.
